  • How to Deal With the Emotions of Debt Settlement

You or someone you love may be facing a pile of unpaid bills. The creditors are calling all hours, and there seems to be no relief in sight. You have to decide what you need to pay and sometimes there is a choice between paying bills or having medicine. In this economy, many people are facing bankruptcy and choose to take the route of debt settlement. There are plenty of articles that tell you how to deal with debt settlement, but few give you ideas on how to keep your emotional balance when doing this.

Let’s look at how to deal with this. There may be feelings of shame, regrets and other emotions that you really can’t name. Please understand that it is normal to feel that way. Remember that you are doing the best that you can during these trying times. You don’t need to feel guilty about having to go the debt settlement route. This is giving you an opportunity to stabilize your bills, and while you will still have to pay them, you will also be able to pay a fixed amount that is fair to both you and the company that you owe the debt to.

It is still very hard to control the flux of emotions as you are dealing with this. One tip to remember, you are not alone. There are many people that have to take this route in order to keep from declaring bankruptcy. You are also not a failure. Circumstances can often be beyond your control to deal with such as losing a job or catastrophic illness. You should never feel like a failure in this situation. That is often easier said than done. Always have someone that you trust to talk to.

One that will listen with an open mind and heart can be the difference between sanity and exploding. Having a safe place to vent and someone safe to listen to this without offering criticism can be a life saver many times over. It can also help you to re balance. Take some time to de stress by doing hobbies or anything that safely brings you a bit of stress relief such as being outside in the sun, or other things that are not harmful to the body or mind. Even meditation does help in this circumstance and can lead to a lifetime of less stress.

Taking care of yourself both physically and emotionally during this time will also help you to weather the emotional storm. Stress can be a killer in many ways. The key here is to moderate the stress by using activities such as a workout or walking to ease the stress. Don’t overdo it though. The main thing when dealing with this is moderation and having someone to talk to in order to keep you calm and the stressors down in order to keep you functioning at a certain level. By taking these steps, you will be able to modulate the stressors and keep your head about you.
