Do you think I should try to get a home equity line of credit at a low rate and pay the Cr. Cards off.

How a Collection Agency Works PDF Print E-mail

This article will explain how a collection agency works and what to expect when a collection agency calls you. A collection agency works by receiving unpaid accounts through their office. Creditors who cannot reach a debtor by any other means will hire a debt collection agency to try and get the money that the creditor is owed. Usually an agreement with the collection agency will be worked out, and a fee will be required from the debtor to pay the outstanding amount. Usually that comes into interest and the collection agencies attempts to collect the debt as well as their costs to do so.

This information will be input into a database, given an account number for the agency and an agent will be assigned to the account for processing the account. The agent in turn will try to contact the debtor usually by phone or email. Mainly they call home, cell and work numbers in order to get in touch with the debtor in question in order to collect the outstanding debt. If they are able to get in touch with the debtor, then they will identify themselves as a collection agency and inform the debtor  that  the call is an attempt to collect a debt and any information used will be used in that manner.

They will try to make arrangements for prompt payment of the debt. They will offer payment arrangements that suit the creditor in question.  They will also give the debtor a certain amount of time to pay the outstanding debt. If they do not, then the collection agency has the right to advise the creditor of this and it will be up to the creditor to take further action. The creditor may leave it with that company or may take it to another one.

A collection agency also can take in unpaid accounts that have not been successfully processed from other agencies as well as the original creditors. This is why sometimes that more than one collection agency may have the same account. It can be confusing for debtors when more than one agency calls them at the same time about the bill in question. When this happens, it is best to advise both collections agencies about the other and let them sort out who is responsible for that particular debt collection on that particular debt.

Collection agencies are just simply that. An agency that is responsible for collecting outstanding debts that are owed to different creditors. They are responsible for collecting these debts and turning the money back to the creditor in question.  This is what a collection agency does. Many different collection agencies have sprung up in recent years as bad credit has increased due to economic situations. So this trend looks to continue as long as there is bad debt and creditors that are owed money. In this article, you have been given an idea of what a credit and collection agency is, what it does and how it operates.

I cosigned for an auto loan 3 yrs. back, now it is in default. I received a summons and answered the fact, in which i denied. my question is I don't know if this co. is legit. My credit bureau just states charge off.....not in collections. Do they have legal rights? I think they got my info on the credit bureau. It has the same amt. and account #, In the bureau the last 4#'s were left out. On the petition it has those numbers listed. Please help. Do they legally hold the note? I will play their game as well. String it out until the sol date expires
