Collection agencies are bill collectors that have been assigned certain bills that you may have and will attempt to collect the debt by contacting you by phone in order to get the debt cleared up. They will also contact you to set up payment arrangements for the bill in question. If one collection agency cannot reach you, then the account may be handled another way, by either taking you to court, or passing the collection to another agency for collection. Bear in mind that it is their job to collect the debt, and that any information will be used for that purpose.

When one calls you, be polite and explain the circumstances and if you can work the bill out to their and your satisfaction. They are just doing the job that they have been given, and by law can call you at work or at your home in order to get the debt resolved. They are allowed to leave messages on your home phone.  They are not allowed to harass a debtor though. They cannot tell you that you are going to jail, that they are calling the cops or any type of intimidation tactic. This is illegal.

How do debt collection agencies get these bills in the first place? They are passed into collections by credit card companies, hospitals or any other type of person that is owed money.  There is a contract signed by the company that the money is owed to and the collection of the debt beings. There is a specified amount of time that a debt collector can keep calling, and trying to get the bill resolved. There are also certain times of the day usually from 8 am to 8 pm depending upon the time zone that the debt collector is in.

They may use different means at their disposal including sending letters to the debtor to get them to get the bill paid. They are also not allowed by law to threaten any debtor. That is also illegal and if complaints are raised, could get them shut down and put out of business for illegal business practices. So they do have rules that they have to go by. The calls that they make will continue until either the bill is paid, or it is kicked back to the original source for referral to either a new collection company or for legal action.

That is, in a nutshell how a collection agency works and why it is in business. One thing to remember when dealing with collection agencies is that it is their business to collect the money owed to the creditor by any means that they can use.  So bear that in mind when speaking to a debt collector about an outstanding debt that you may owe. Remember, that each call is taped, so don’t threaten a bill collector or you will be on a one way visit to jail. It just isn’t worth it. Bill collection agencies are helping in the recovery of many different debts.
