  • Tips to fixing errors on your credit report

There is nothing more surprising and embarrassing and sometimes aggravating than finding out that there are wrong or inaccurate details on your credit report that are negatively affecting your credit. Granted, most people so not really know about these problems until they are denied credit for this reason. At times just one misreported late payment can really screw up your credit big time. There are many things that you can do to get these errors fixed and taken off of your credit report. Here is where you need to start.

Get a copy of your credit report.
This is always the first step that you need to take so that you know exactly what is on your credit report and what needs to be repaired as far as errors go. You will be able to get a free copy of your credit report if your request it within 60 days of receiving the written rejection letter/notice from the creditor.

Start keeping a meticulous Phone Log. You need to start keeping track of all telephone calls and letters/ e-mails that you send to the creditor when you are trying to get them to clear up any incorrectly reported information. If you wind up having to go to court against the creditor to get them to remove and correct the inaccurate information you are better off having expertly kept written records of all correspondences and phone conferences.

Stay calm and Professional. You will not get very far if you are yelling and screaming at the people in the creditor’s office or the credit reporting agency. All this says is that you are not in control. Those that work in and for these companies are used to hearing people yelling, screaming and cursing when their credit is bad or there is a problem that needs to be fixed. What you really need to do is to keep your voice down, your tone both Professional and confident and your conversation centered on the matter at hand. All of these will get you farther than losing your cool will.

Look at this as if you are going to court. What this means is that you need to be prepared in every possible way that you can imagine. If you are calling and writing to the creditors and credit bureaus, have very thorough, well documented proof of each conversation that you have in this matter. You need to always have the Full Name, extension number and Team number if applicable of the person/people you speak to. You will also want to have their direct supervisor’s name and information written down. You need to keep all letters that you receive and copies of all that you write that are outgoing… as well as copies of any and all e-mails that pertain to the matter in a file folder that is clearly marked as such.

These are the main things that you can do to get errors cleared up. If all else fails, you might need to hire an attorney and go to the media for help.
