  • The popular reasons for looking at your credit report

Many people are likely to ask the question “Why do I even need to look at or know what is in my credit report?” The simplest answer to this question is this: if you do not know what is in your credit report, you will not even know if your payments or other important information is being or has been incorrectly reported to the credit bureaus. This is one of the reasons that you need to check over your credit report at least once a year. There are many other reasons that you really need to be curious about what is in your credit report which will be listed one by one with a clear explanation about why it pertains to this discussion.

    Spotting late payments

You need to know if your credit card company and/or lenders are reporting your payment history accurately. If they are not reporting your on-time or early payments as they come in and are reporting them as late of missed instead; this will negatively impact your credit rating and score. It is not that bad if you have one or two late payments on your credit report, but you do not need to have many of them reported as late or missed altogether. These have a very negative impact on your credit.

    Evidence of Identity Theft

You need to know if someone has gotten hold of your personal information and has been using you to get credit and leaving you stuck with the bad credit when they do not pay the resulting bills that are coming in. You need to keep a close eye on the types and names of the currently open accounts that are listed on your credit report. This is becoming more and more of a necessity lately as more and more cyber-criminals are popping up and opening their “offices” for business.

    Familiarize yourself with
it Do you realize how many people really do not even know what their credit report looks like, how many pages it is or have any blessed idea how to read it to know what the creditors are being told? This is something that you might really be surprised about. There are more people who have no idea what a credit report even looks like, much less what is on their own credit report.

To learn exactly how to read your credit report
This is something that goes hand-in-hand with the previous section and is meant to expand on it a little more. When you really do not know how to read or interpret your credit report (or any credit report for that matter); you need to learn how to do this pretty quickly. There are so many different websites that will show you in detail what each part of a credit report is and how to determine what it is telling you. You can also call on a credit counselor or go to your local bank and ask them if they will explain how to read your credit report.
